우리에게는 공간, 풍경과 대면했을 때 유사한 어떤 경험이 있습니다. 처음 가보는 장소가 전혀 낯설지 않고 마치 전에 그 자리에 있었던 것과 같은 친숙한 느낌을 주거나, 혹은 반대로 항상 다녔던 공간인데도 오늘, 바로 이 순간 참 낯설게 느껴지는 공간이 있습니다. 공간이 우리를 알아보고 말을 건네는 걸까요? 아니면 내가 기억하지 못하는 시간이 존재하는 걸까요? 공간과 시간에 대해, 그 공간이 담아내는 시간, 시간이 담아내는 공간에 대해 생각해보게 됩니다. 이번 전시는 어긋나기도 하면서 어디론가 잠입하는 시공간을 자신의 고유 화법으로 담아내는 두 작가들과 함께 합니다.

유리 작가의 작품은 스테인레스 스틸을 기하학적인 형태와 색면을 미니멀리즘 구성 어법으로 보여줍니다. 

그의 작품에 가까이 다가서면 작품 안에 나를 포함한 공간을 보여주는 거울이 있음을 발견하고 새로운 공간과 조우하게 됩니다. 

조각 안에 거울처럼 투영되는 나는 작품 안의 공간에 존재하고 동시에 작품의 부분을 구성하는 타인으로 존재되기도 합니다. 

조각가 유리는 여러 형태의 도형을 그리고 만들어가는 과정에서 선 하나의 미미한 기울임 만으로도 변형되는 시각적 변화에, 우리의 지각이 얼마나 다르게 작용하는지 흥미로움을 가지고 작업에 임하게 되었다고 합니다. 

그의 작품들은 유사한 형태를 띠고 있음에도 불구하고 작품 내부의 작은 구성 변화, 작품과 대면하는 대상에 의해 변형되는 다양한 이미지를 생산합니다.

 작가가 제공하는 작은 공간 안에 들어서는 새로운 경험과 참여에 초대합니다.

화가 윤정선의 풍경에서는 낯설음과 친근함이 함께 공존합니다. 

대학 졸업 후 뉴욕, 볼티모어, 북경, 런던, 서울 그리고 청주 등을 거치며 작가는 주변 풍경을 자신의 기억으로 다시 캔버스에 옮겨 담았습니다. 

94년부터 20년이 넘게 그려진 풍경들을 다시 한 장면씩 기억에서 꺼내어 손바닥 크기만한 10x12 cm 캔버스에 그리게 된 작품들을 이번 전시에서 소개합니다. 

기억의 장면 안에서 다시 기억을 잘라낸 이미지들입니다. 

사람마다 애착을 느끼며 간직하는 기억이 있다면 화가 윤정선에게는 그의 시간과 시선을 공유한 도시의 풍경인 듯 합니다. 

그 풍경을 담아내고 그것을 다시 기억에서 꺼내어 되짚어 보는 과정을 통해 윤 작가는 차곡차곡 쌓아가는 기억을 다시금 정리하며 여정의 공간을 드러냅니다. 

"기억 속에서 존재하는 것을 그리면서 보이지 않는 것에 관해 이야기하고 싶다" 라고 작가는 말합니다. 

이번 전시에서는 오랜 시간 동안 마무리 하지 못하고 남겨져 붓 자국의 흔적이 있는 한강공원 작품에 새로운 기운을 더하여 지나온 시간과 현재의 공존을 담아 

이촌동 드로잉룸에서 한강공원 작품의 첫 외출을 시도합니다.

진정한 화가에 있어서 사물들은 스스로의 분위기를 창조해내고

모든 색채는 하나의 발광이 되며, 또 모든 색채는 물질의 내밀성을 드러낸다.

윤정선 작가와의 인터뷰 

dR: 윤작가님의 그림에는 건축물이 많이 등장하는데요, 특별히 그림의 소재로 건물을 선택하신 이유에 대해 듣고 싶습니다.

​Many of your works depict architecture as subjects. Are there any specific reasons for this?

YJS: 사람은 유동적으로 옮겨 다니지만 사람이 지나온 장소는 오랫동안 그 자리를 지키며 기억을 상기시키더라고요. 건물이나 장소를 그리지만 제 그림의 주인공은 사람이고 간접화법으로 건물을 그리고 있어요. 저는 신자는 아니지만 유신론자예요. 절대적인 누군가가 인간을 창조했고 인간이 자연의 일부임을 믿습니다. 신이 인간의 모습을 창조한 것처럼 건축은 인간이 신의 행위를 모방해서 만든 것이라고 생각합니다.

People move around from places to places, but the buildings preserve the place and contain the memories. I paint buildings or places but my main subject of interest is in human - the buildings are indirect tools of sharing conversation with the people.

I am not religious but I do believe in the supreme being who created human as part of the nature. Architecture is the creation of people, the same way how human is the creations of god.

인간과 건축물은 유사한 점이 많습니다. 건물도 보이는 외부와 밖에서는 보이지 않는 내부가 존재하고 (사람도 밖에서 보여지지 않는 마음이 있듯이) 그 둘을 연결해 주는 것이 창문이고요.. 낯선 환경을 유학생활을 통해 경험하면서 세상과 내가 분리되어 있고 나 자신은 구석에서 흘러가지 않는 시간에 존재하는 것만 같았습니다. 시간과 공간에 대해 많이 고민했던 시간이었죠. 그러면서 스스로 얻어낸 답은 내가 구석이라고 생각하는 나의 자리가 구석이 아니라 나는 시간 안에 앉아 있는데 나의 구석은 지구의 한 부분이다 라고 생각하게 되었어요. 그러면서 점점 순간에 관심을 가지게 되었고, 기억은 과거에만 있다고 생각했는데 이젠 현재에도 있고 미래에도 있다고 생각해요. 지금은 기억이 더 현재에 살아있는 것 같아요.

Architecture and human share similar characteristics. Buildings have both the visible exterior and the invisible interior similar to how people’s minds are mostly hidden. Windows become bridges to the two worlds. Living the unfamiliar life while studying

abroad gave me an experience of staying inside the corner of immobilized time separated from the world. It was a period that allowed plenty of contemplation over time and space. What I learned was that the corner I was staying in is actually a small portion of this earth inside the larger sphere of time. This revelation drew my attention to fragmented moments where memories can exist in the past, present, or even future. Recently, my memories tend to reside more on the present side.

"To me, artwork is a way of questioning and contemplating the life and environment that surrounds oneself. Documenting and recreating one’s experience - that’s what I think artwork ought to be. Art is what wraps around the central nucleus of your being. The landscapes I paint are portions of my memories. They are questions towards my identity and are itineraries for a journey in search for oneself. "

dR: 윤작가님 작품의 독특한 색감에 대해 듣고 싶습니다.

Please tell us more about the colors you use which appear very special.

YJS: 초기에는 회색 톤을 많이 사용했습니다. 유학 시절, 기차나 버스를 타고 창문을 통해 지나가는 풍경을 바라다 볼 때 바깥 세상을 보면서 세상은 회색 빛 온통 무채색인데, 나만 색이 있다고 느껴졌어요. 세상과 나의 거리감이 마치 필터를 넣은 것 같은 색감을 쓰게 된 것 같아요. 제가 점점 세상과 관계를 맺는 것에 익숙해지면서 제 캔버스에 색이 들어가게 됐고요. 무의식적으로 붉은색 계열이 나만의 색으로 사용되어 지고 있어요. 최근에는 색감도 많이 밝아지고 다양해지고 있는데 그래서인지 세상과 더 가까워진 느낌이고요..

In the past I had the tendency of using many grey tones. In my student years, I would look out the windows of a bus or a train and often think that the whole world was achromatic and that I only had colors. The distance set apart between the world and

myself allowed me to only use colors as if through a filter. More colors started to appear on my canvas as the world became more relevant. Red tones are often identified with myself somewhat unconsciously. Recently I use more variety of bright colors, and maybe that’s why I feel more connected to the world.

dR: 작가님이 작품의 소재로 선택한 공간은 주로 어떤 곳인가요?

​What kind of spatial subjects do you choose for your work?

YJS: 저에게 개인적으로 친숙한 공간, 길, 장소, 때론 그 길에 있는 집을 그리고 있습니다.

북경에서 레지던시를 하던 당시 근대건축물에 관심을 가지게 되었고요. 우리의 의지와 계획을 가지고 지어진 것이 아니라 일제에 의해 만들어진 장소들(서울역, 서대문역사박물관, 경성재판소; 시립미술관 등등)도 제 관심을 끌었어요. 특히 익선동은 1900년대 초반에 일본 적산가옥이 늘어갈 때 한국의 한 부동산 업자가 보급성 한옥으로 우리의 고유한 것을 지키기 위해 만든 마을이라고 해요, 익선동 외벽이 타일이었는데 내부에 주로 쓰이는 타일을 내부와 외부에 구분 없이 사용한 것이 특이하다고 생각했습니다. 저는 그런 공간의 기억이 제 그림 이미지를 통해서 기억 한 조각을 떠올리는 블랙홀 같은 역할을 했으면 좋겠어요. 한 이미지를 통해서 다른 곳으로 연결되는 통로의 역할이 되는거죠. 세월이 흐르면서 결국 사라지고 변해가는 장소들을 기록으로 남기고 싶은 마음이고요.

I paint familiar spaces such as streets, places, or buildings on the streets. During the residency program in Beijing, I became interested in colonial buildings. The buildings (such as Seoul Station, Seodaemun prison, Court house, etc.) were built by the

Japanese Imperialists rather than from our will nor our plans. The village of Iksundong in particular was formed by a Korean developer who promoted traditional hanoks against the growing supply of Japanese style homes. The exterior of these houses were applied with tiles which are normally interior materials. I found this very special. I want my painting to become a blackhole where such fragment of memory can be induced. One image can become a passage to another space and time. I want to archive spaces that change and disappear over time.

dR:. 이번 드로잉룸에서 처음으로 선을 보인 한강공원에 대해 이야기 해주세요.

​Could you please explain more on the Han River park which is first featured at drawingRoom?

YJS: 영국 유학시절 좁은 기숙사에서 답답함을 달래고자 영국의 공원을 자주 찾곤 했어요. 탁트인 공간에서 주는 평안함과 위로가 참 좋았고요. 한국에 와서도 종종 답답할때 갈 곳을 찾곤 했는데 그때 찾아간 곳이 한강고수부지예요. 여의도 한강고수부지를 자주 찾았고 여러 번 찾은 공간이어서 그리고 싶다는 생각을 하게 되었어요. 탁트인 공간인건 참 좋았는데 수면을 어떻게 그려야 할 지 고민도 많이 하고,막연함을 많이 느꼈습니다. 다른 작품들에 비해 정말 많은 사진을 모았다가 그린 그림이기도 합니다. 이번 한강강변 작업에선 시간의 흐름을 녹색의 잔디에 연두, 회색, 죽은 초록으로 담아보았습니다.

While studying in UK, I frequented public gardens just to escape the cramped dorm room. The open space truly gave me comfort and consolation. When I needed the comfort of such space in Korea, I would head to Han River banks. The one in Yoeuido

was where I visited often and I wanted to paint this at one point. Being an open space was a good thing, but it was difficult to decide how to paint the surface of the water. This painting required for a collection more photographs than usual. I tried to contain the passing of time in the green grass through mixing colors of light green, grey, and desaturated green.

​dR: 작년부터 작업하고 계신 10x12cm의 작은 그림들의 계획에 대해서 듣고 싶습니다.

​We would like to learn more about the small 10x12cm painting series that you had been involved since last year.

​

YJS: 사실은 몸이 안좋아져서 의사로부터 그림을 잠시 쉬어야 한다는 얘기를 듣고 시작한 게 작은 그림들 이예요. 전의 작품들 속의 한 장면이나 장소들을 다시 꺼내어 정리해 보고 싶은 마음으로 시작된 작업입니다. 그런데 생각보다 다시 그린다는 것이 쉽지 않았어요. 하지만 당분간 계속 만들고 싶습니다.

Actually, my doctor recommended me to take a break from painting due to health conditions, so I started to do something small. It is my way of re-visiting a scene or a place from my previous works for re-organizing. However, re-visiting turned out not as easy as imagined. Nevertheless I intend to continue this work for the time being.

앞으로의 계획이라면 이 작은 그림들을 전체적으로 색깔의 흐림을 보여주고 장소마다 다르게 표현하고 싶어요. 색의 흐름으로 도시를 표현하고 싶은거죠. 가까이 봐서는 구상이지만, 멀리서 봤을 때는 추상적 작업으로 보여지는 걸 구상하고 있습니다. 길게 진행해야 할 프로젝트로 생각하고 있습니다. 중간에 빠진 이야기들을 끼워 넣으면서 이 프로젝트를 진행하고 싶어요. 이 작은 그림 시리즈는 내 작업에 다시 방향성을 제시해주고 하고 싶은 것을 생각나게 해준 작품들이예요. 그동안 내가 보지 못하고 깨닫지 못한 내가 가진 좋은 것들을 다시 생각해 보게 한 작업이지요. 제가 그릴 수 있는 것의 장점들을 다시 꺼내주었어요.

With these small paintings, I plan to give darker color tones and to express each place different. In other words, I want to express a city through flow of colors, which may appear figurative when looked close but appear abstract when seen from a distance. It’s

going to be a long-term project. I want to fill in between the fragments with missing narratives. This small painting series is something that helped me realize and rediscover the good things that I already had. It brought out to surface all the good things from which I can paint

유리 작가와의 인터뷰 

dR: 작품이 만들어지는 제작과정에 대해 듣고 싶습니다. 재료로 스테인레스 스틸을 사용하시게 된 동기가 있으신지요?

dR: We would like to learn more about your work process. Do you have any specific reason for using stainless steel material?

YL: 작품 제작과정을 크게 구상단계와 제작단계로 나눠서 설명드릴 수 있을 것 같습니다. 구상단계에서는 제 머릿속에 이미지를 손으로 드로잉하며 구체화시키고, 그 후에 컴퓨터 드로잉으로 정확하게 옮기는 작업을 합니다. 컴퓨터드로잉 과정에서 작품의 색도 조정의 과정을 거치고 구체화되구요. 

제작단계는 정확하게 수치화 된 컴퓨터드로잉 파일을 바탕으로 금속판 절단- 가공 및 용접 – 도색 - 스테인레스 스틸 (슈퍼미러)판 접착 순서로 이루어집니다. 

2016년경부터 평면성을 벗어나 대상을 새롭게 인식할 수 있는 하나의 장치로 ‘거울‘이라는 매체를 이용한 작업을 하기 시작하였는데 처음에는 컬러아크릴판(반투명)과 아크릴거울을 사용해서 작업을 했었어요. 컬러 아크릴판을 사용하면 색을 제가 칠할 필요는 없지만 색에 대한 선택의 폭이 좁았고, 조각을 전공한 제게는 제작공정도 심플해서 만들어가는 성취감이 크지는 않았어요. 그러다 조금 더 견고한 재료를 찾게 되었는데, 거울을 대체할 수 있고, 아크릴보다 견고한 재료로 스테인레스 스틸을 선택하게 되었어요. 판을 가공하기에 따라서 느낌을 달리할 수 있는 것도 마음에 들었고요. 무엇보다 도색의 과정에서 컬러를 자유롭게 쓸 수 있는 점도 크게 작용했습니다. 

아크릴을 이용하면 제작공정이 지금보다 훨씬 간편하고 비용도 절감되긴 하지만 금속을 다루면서 여러 가지 과정이 동반되는 공정이 저에게 더 맞는 것 같아요. 작업 결과적으로도 더 만족스럽구요.

YL: I can explain my working process in two part; planning and producing. During the planning process, I clarify the image through hand drawing, then transfer to computer drawing in precision. Some adjustments to chromacity is made during the computer drawing process, and the image becomes more specific. Based on this precise computer drawing, the metal gets cut, welded, colored and stainless steel (super mirror) is applied.

I started using ‘mirror’ since 2016 in order to expand the flatness and to achieve new perception of objects by using the initial mediums of colored plastic or acrylic mirror. The colored plastics came with its colors, but the selection of colors were limited and the whole process of fabrication was too simple that it did not provide enough satisfaction, especially to someone coming from a sculptural background. So I searched for more sturdy material and came with stainless steel. I also liked how appearance can be adjusted based on how you fabricate it but most of all, the freedom of applying variety of colors was its biggest advantage. Using plastics may reduce the effort and cost in the production, but the complex processes that follow stainless steel seems to suit me better and I feel more satisfied at the end.

dR: 구상단계에서 머릿속의 이미지를 손으로 드로잉 하신다고 하셨는데요, 이미지의 영감은 어디 서 얻으시는지요?

dR: You mentioned that in the planning stage, you use hand drawings to bring out images in your head. Where do you get inspirations of such images from?

 YL: 겹쳐진 사물들, 건축구조의 일부 등 일상에서 영감을 받기도 하고, 기하학적 이미지들을 광범위하게 리서치하기도 합니다. 리서치를 하다보면 시대와 문화에 따라 미의 기준이나 보는 방식이 굉장히 달라져 왔다는 것을 알 수 있죠. 어떤 시대와 문화 속에서 사느냐에 따라서 개인이 대상을 보고 인지하는 방식에도 상당히 영향을 미쳤다는 것은 굉장히 흥미로운 부분입니다. 저는 개인이 가지고 있는 습관적 시각에서 벗어나 새로운 인식의 가능성을 발견할 수 있도록 염두에 두고 구상하려고 노력해요. 머릿속에 완벽한 이미지를 가지고 드로잉으로 옮긴다기보다는 드로잉 과정에서 개체들을 조합해보며 비슷한 형태에서 미세한 변화를 주는 작업을 합니다. 머릿속으로 큰 틀을 잡는다면 드로잉과정에서는 많은 실험을 하는 편이에요. 입체작업 같은 경우는 드로잉 그대로 종이로 모형을 만들어 봅니다.

YL: My inspirations come from overlapped objects, parts of architectural structures, and I often research geometric shapes in general. The research reveals that our point of view and aesthetic standards have changed drastically depending on the culture and the times. It is quite interesting to find that a certain individual’s view and perception is highly influenced by the conditions of time and culture. In the planning process, I seek for possibilities of finding new ways of perception rather than residing in personal viewing habits. Instead of transferring perfect images from your head to drawings, I assemble objects into an approximate form and then apply subtle changes during the drawing process. If the planning stage is about setting up larger frame in my head, the drawing process is where I do many experiments. The drawings are assembled into paper models when doing three dimensional works.
