드로잉룸은 서촌 누하동 이전 개관 첫 전시로 오는 4월 14일부터 5월21일까지 이미연 작가의 개인전을 개최한다.

이번 전시에서 이미연 작가는 스위스의 산 속 마을 쿠어 에서 2년 동안 거주하며 몸으로 기억하고 담아낸 풍경들을

대범한 필체와 독특한 색채의 평면회화로 선보인다.

전시 제목 <Fernweh>는 “향수”의 반대말로 멀고 낯선 그 어떤 곳을 갈망한다는 의미의 독일어이다.

이 전시 또한 어딘가에 존재하는 먼 곳의 그 곳과 조우하는 시간을 만나보고자 한다.

<Fernweh_다시 먼 그곳으로> 전시를 시작으로 종로 서촌의 새 공간에서 새로운 여정을 시작하는 드로잉룸은 보다 다양한 시선과 열정으로

동시대 현대미술을 제시할 것이다.

Fernweh 는 독일어로 향수의 반대말이라고 할 수 있다.

익숙한 집을 떠나 멀고 낯선 어떤 곳을 갈망한다는 깊은 의미를 이 짧고 간결한 단어는 담고있다.

스위스 쿠어, 인구 3만의 산 속 마을, 쿠어를 둘러싼 3000m 높이의 산들에 둘러 쌓여 살았던 2년은 내가 나 스스로와 가진 관계를 단순하게 했고, 나의 작품을 바꾸었다. 몸은 그곳을 떠나왔지만 마음의 고향이 되어버린 그곳에 나의 정신은 항상 머물러있다. 높은 스위스 산의 인간이 범접할 수 없는 압도적인 기운은 나를 항상 그곳으로 부를것 이다. 또한 이제 한국의 아늑한 산 안에서 나를 찾고 그리게 될 것이다.

이번 전시는 아들 산이가 태어나기 전에 그린 그림들이다. 지금 산이는 첫 돌을 앞두고 있고 나의 삶은 작업과는 잠시 멀어졌으나 나는 눈을 감고 숨이 차게 오르내렸던 산길과, 세상이 내려다보이던 높은 봉우리들과, 산의 중력을 다 품은 것 같은 깊은 계곡과, 두꺼운 이불처럼 나를 감쌌던 끝없는 숲 속을 수십 번 다녀왔다.

다시 그 먼 곳으로 가서 산을 오르며 작업의 씨앗을 가져올 날을 기다린다.

We bought this house 13 years ago. It is sheltered in a small and ancient fishing village on the northern shore of Lake Como, where the lake opens towards the mountains whose glaciers have fed it for thousands of years. What we see from the house is a simple combination of sky, water and mountains. And yet no combination changes as much as sky, water and mountains. For thirteen years we have been mesmerised by this view, spending endless hours contemplating the light, clouds, water, winds, waves, moving shadows, seasonal effects on colours, the changing weather systems, the clarity of the air, the details of the rocks, the moving lines of trees and melting snow. There is always something happening.

When we saw Miyeon Lee’s painting, ‘Calanda’, it seemed immediately familiar. Though Miyeon had been inspired by the Calanda Mountain looming over Chur, in Switzerland, where she then lived, she had captured something that we had also seen from our house in Italy. Somehow, the view she had painted was one of ours, it belonged also to our landscape. Once hanged by a window, the composition of the painting itself seemed to fit the horizon and there was a continuity between the outside view and its representation on canvas. But, in effect, Miyeon Lee’s painting has little to do with ‘representation’. In her painting the core question is ‘seizure’ and, with a very strict economy of means, she captures both a moment and a vision.

Of course we remember the pink reflections of the setting sun on the water and in the sky and the bright lines of the dying sun behind the clouds. We had already seen all this; it had also happened in front us, as we gazed out, mesmerised, at ‘our’ view. We could memorize it, but we were unable to grasp it.

Miyeon Lee’s painting is a remembrance and a reminder.

수천년동안 빙하가 모양을 내온 산을 향해 열린 코모 호수의 북쪽 기슭, 작고 오래된 어촌 마을에 위치한 이 집을 우리는 13년전에 샀다. 우리집에서 보이는 풍경은 하늘과 물, 산의 간결한 조합이다.

그러나 하늘, 물, 산만큼 항상 변화하는 조합은 없다. 13년 동안 우리는 이 풍경에 매료되어 그 안의 빛, 구름, 물, 바람, 파도, 움직이는 그림자, 계절에 따라 변하는 색, 날씨, 공기, 바위의 디테일, 움직이는 나무가 만드는 선, 녹는 눈에 대해 생각하며 끝없는 시간을 보냈다.

이미연의 그림 ‘칼란다’를 보았을때 금세 낯이 익었다. 미연은 당시 그녀의 생활 터전이었던 스위스 쿠어 (Chur)를 감싼 칼란다 산에서 영감을 받았지만, 그녀가 포착한 그것은 이탈리아에 있는 우리 집에서 보이는 것 이기도 했다. 그녀가 그린 풍경은 우리의 것이었고, 우리의 풍경이기도 했다.

창문 옆에 자리를 잡은 미연의 그림 구조는 수평선과 어울리고 외부의 풍경과 캔버스의 표현 사이에는 연속성이 있다. 그러나 미연의 그림은 사실상 ‘표현’과는 별 상관이 없다. 그녀의 그림에서 핵심은 ‘포착’이며 정확히 말하자면 그녀는 순간과 바라봄 두가지를 포착해 낸다.

당연히 우리는 분홍색 석양빛이 물위에 반사되고, 넘어가는 태양의 선명한 선이 구름에 기록된 순간들을 기억한다. ’우리’의 풍경속에서 이미 일어난 이 순간들을 우리는 이미 다 보아왔고 기억한다. 그러나 우리는 포착할수는 없었다.

미연의 그림은 기억이자 상기이다.

The pictures don't mean anything to both of us because of their beauty, but what's inside is valid. We see in them an experience that is foreign to us, but which concerns us.

We got to know your paintings in a landscape we share - that connects us. Painting as drawing, writing obviously connects: we may have different languages, but your wordless conversation with Hannes in Chur, around the pictures on the floor, testifies to that. My conversations with Hannes, your drawings surrounding us, are another sign of this. As I write, I see that Hannes and I are having almost the same drawings - a view of the space of the Avers valley in a few strokes - he with the deer, which certainly stands for those you saw with Petruschka....

We decided together to hang your forest diptych where no actual picture can hang, on the wooden walls of the tower chamber, because you can take up that space.

작품의 아름다움 때문에 이미지 자체는 우리에게 큰 의미가 없으며, 작품 안의 세계에 의미를 둔다.

작품 안에서 우리에게 낯설면서도 우리와 연관된 경험을 본다.

서로 공유했던 풍경 안에서 당신의 그림을 알게되었고 이것이 우리를 이어준다.

내가 Hannes와 나누는 대화, 우리를 둘러싼 당신의 드로잉들 또한 우리 모두를 연결하는 또 하나의 증명이다.

내가 이 글을 쓰는동안 Hannes와 나는 같은 드로잉을 바라보고 있다 - Avers 계곡을 표현하는 단순한 획들, Petruschka와 같이 보았던 사슴들...

우리는 당신의 숲 딥틱 (diptych) 작품을 어떤 작품도 걸릴 수 없었던 tower chamber 방의 나무 벽에 걸기로 했다, 왜냐면 당신의 작품은 그 공간을 메꿀 수 있기 때문에.

On an orange ground, partially recognizable, lies a deep and luminous green on which the wild black structure - like fishbones – can be seen as a larch forest. Depending on the daylight, the structure changes from a silver to a dark black and begins to come alive on the rich green. The picture has an archaic beauty that touches us deeply. I live since few years with Miyeons painting ‘Calanda_7.50am_27/02/19’ close to me, and the work makes me still happy whenever I see it, even passing by more then ten times a day… The colors take me for a moment out of daily life and open my spirit to undefined further places. Thanks Miyeon and I wish I could come and see your new works in Seoul, but I probably have to wait for another exposition somewhere in Europe.
